With his most anticipated upcoming comedy film, ‘Khel Khel Mein’, that releases on Independence day this year, Akshay Kumar’s filmography boasts incredible versatility and there’s one genre where his fans truly crown him king: comedy!
These are a few movies of Akshay Kumar which were announced blockbuster super-hits at the box office:
1. Hera Pheri (2000) : Three unemployed men who are initially strangers but eventually become each other’s life support because of how unlucky they are in case of having money in their pockets. When they do get the golden opportunity to get some, they start falling into trouble because of the lies and mistakes they unknowingly commit. Akshay Kumar’s character “Raju” is a loner and has absolutely no one to share his feelings but has no other option but to befriend Shyam and Baburao.
2. Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007): one of the most famously known horror-comedies in the recent film industry, it’s been more than 15 years and this film is still relevant. More importantly, it has put light on the mental health aspect of it. Kumar plays the wacky – psychologist friend of Shiney Ahuja’s character Sidhhant who visits the bungalow and discovers the secrets and somewhat becomes a catalyst to the happenings as well. His banters with the other characters and punchlines add light-weight relief to the rather horror-psych thriller part of the film.
3. Action Replayy (2010): A Back to the Future remake, it delivers well not only for the audience who belonged in that era but also for the ones who would experience watching this film. A nostalgic trip that doesn’t demand heavy realism and is to purely treat the eye. Akshay Kumar’s timid and loner boy falling in love with a rival girl and then transitioning with the help of his future son is an absolute delight for people who like such character development. His young look gave the most hilarious moments across the film which also complimented his timid-shy character, Kishan.
4. Housefull 2 (2012): The title itself gives out the theme wherein the entire house of an age-old bandit and then relationships become an absolute menace to manage amongst the presence of a few other characters resulting in it being an amazing situational comedy. Akshay Kumar’s character “Sunny”, has the best signature expression throughout the film, his eased-know-it-all character has a different feel to it in this wholesome comedy.
5. Heyy Babyy (2007): A comedy film initially turns into an emotional one, where three single friends have major commitment issues and break hearts without hesitating, but they find an ‘angel’ at their doorstep one day and that’s when it takes a shift. Akshay Kumar’s annoyed to fatherly love moments were entirely heartwarming for the audiences.
6. Welcome (2007): Between the chaotic family politics and menacing dons, Rajiv’s comedic charm comes from the contrast between his upstanding life and the chaotic world he gets entangled in when he pursues his love interest.
7. Tees Maar Khan (2010): Tabrez Mirza(Akshay Kumar) is a clever and smooth operator who hatches a daring plan to rob a train filled with treasure and money. To fulfil his boss’s demands, he poses as a famous movie producer and cons an entire village into helping him with the heist. His humor emerges from his extravagant and over-confident personality, his outrageous schemes, the way he interacts with the unsuspecting villagers, and of course his 3 minions who have him sitting on their heads and instructing them what to do.
8. Phir Hera Pheri (2006): Sequel to the previous one, this film picks off exactly where it was left at, where the three friends became rich, Akshay Kumar reprises his character who is lovable but goofy as well and with even more shenanigans in this film.
9. It’s Entertainment (2014): Akshay Kumar portrays Akhil Lokhande, a down-on-his-luck man who dreams of becoming extremely rich. He knows he has nothing to worry about now when he learns his estranged wealthy father has passed away and he might have left back his entire wealth and properties on his name. However, Akhil’s inheritance takes an unexpected turn when he discovers the entire fortune is left to… a dog named Entertainment! Kumar’s unlucky, disappointment, and scheming made the audience like this film a little more unexpectedly.
10. Good Newzz (2019): Akshay Kumar is a successful career-oriented businessman who has been trying to have a kid with his wife, but unlike his financial capabilities, they constantly fail to do so, this is when they opt for an IVF treatment where the entire chaos begins. Varun Batra’s humor comes from his uptight personality clashing with the absurdity of the situation. He’s a man used to control, but the film throws hilarious curveballs at him, forcing him to adapt and grow alongside his wife.
It is being speculated that he might be doing a cameo in the upcoming horror-comedy sequel, Stree 2 alongside Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkumar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, where we might get to see him an entertaining role.
